Mack is a psychic classified as a "Sniff". Sniffs are "highly developed psychometrics who can track the location of either people or objects over varying distances. Like bloodhounds, their tracking ability is increased if they have tactile access to an object that has been in direct contact with the subject. Sniffs receive information based on images, not specific addresses, which is why identifiable landmarks help increase their effectiveness." As implied by the moniker, a Sniff's powers are based primarily around their sense of smell, and secondarily: touch. Most Sniffs wear gloves to prevent cross contamination of scents, and so that they can focus more easily, but Mack doesn't because he likes to think he's a bigger bad-ass than he is, and also as an attempt to project some amount of normalcy.

He is an agent with Division, an organization within the U.S. government that both employs and experiments on psychics against their wills in an attempt to create super soldiers. They are not the good guys. Mack is not the worst guy, but he's not nice either. He's also recently had an entire false childhood forcibly implanted in his head by another type of psychic, which has given him a different perspective on things that he never wanted.

But then, like almost all Division agents, his entire life is a fabrication forcibly implanted in his head by Division itself. He has no idea.
